💝 Singles' Day — a celebration that began as a tongue-in-cheek anti-Valentine’s Day in Chinese universities in the 1990s and has since become the world’s biggest shopping phenomenon! The date 11.11 was chosen for a reason — the four ones symbolize single people. In 2009, Alibaba turned the day into a mega sale festival, and now Singles' Day generates more sales than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined — in 2023 alone, more than $156 billion was spent in China! Fun fact: originally, the holiday was celebrated mainly by men who bought themselves four deep-fried dough sticks (youtiao) — one for each “1” in the date.
